Over the last week, almost everyone in America has had to confront their feelings about the police. Whether positive or negative, based on propaganda or fact, it has been a struggle for many to realize that the idea in their head doesn’t match up with reality. In fact, it often stands in direct opposition to reality. With the police becoming more militarized and brutality cases at an all time high, one are man still believes that he would know if American police forces had become too totalitarian and we sat down for an interview with him to find out why.
“Uh, I’m pretty sure I would know,” explained area man and vest-wearer Keith Davidson. “I mean, do you really think that the police could militarize and begin enforcing martial law in broad daylight? I don’t think so. Not my boys in blue.”
Yes, yes we do. But not wanting to jump the gun on this discussion, we decided to ask Keith what he thought about the recent events that lead to the nationwide protests we have been seeing.
“Yes, this was clearly a case of a bad cop doing a bad thing,” Keith acknowledged. “But have the police become too powerful? No way. When was the last time you saw a police officer hurt someone in real life? Like you yourself, not just a video on the internet.”
“Well, at a protest this weekend, I witnessed plenty of people being brutalized and shot with rubber bullets, bu-“
“Yeah yeah yeah, sure. I’m talking about on just a normal day with someone who didn’t commit a crime. Have you seen anyone do that? Half the videos you see online aren’t real anyways.”
“What makes you say that?”
“Well, there is no way they would get away with it. Obviously. I mean, if a cop is caught on camera committing a crime, they would be arrested. Seems pretty straightforward.”
“And by that logic, police can’t be totalitarian and establish a police state where the word of the Supreme Leader exists beyond all civil law?”
“Well, it’s not that simple, but that’s the basic idea, sure. I mean, do you see tanks plowing down your streets? Do you feel unsafe around police? Are you worried that you’ll be disappeared without trial for your Internet history and private thoughts? Only when that is the case will I acknowledge that American police are too powerful.”
“Yes, to all of those questions.”
“Well, that’s just like your opinion, man.”
And it was right at that moment that our internet disconnected and the call we were conducting the interview on was dropped. What a shame.
